Good Idea/Bad Idea: Flat Bulbs

Flat Bulbs

The other day, I spotted on Core 77 a new design for incandescent lightbulbs. These “flat bulbs” fit into existing sockets, but fill less volume, making them easier to pack, ship, and store. Very spiffy.

But in an instant I questioned my initial reaction and asked “why make incandescent bulbs at all?” They use more energy, have shorter lifespans, generate more ambient heat, and break easier, if it comes to that.

So while the idea is clever, it’s also about ten years past that sweet spot. These would have been awesome, but I fear they’ll be still-born as a design alternative.

  1. Interesting. I never heard of these before, so I can’t really comment on performance or concept.. but it does seem interesting.

  2. Maybe the idea doesn’t need to be aborted…could one do a CFL, coiled more planar than round?
