Top Ten Luxury Brands

Forbes has a run-down of the ten most powerful luxury brands. The rating system here is based on brand value — something very hard to quantify. There could be some stock market math, but really no one can say the value (in dollars) of a brand until it’s ready to be sold.

Check out the list Here »

One thing that makes me think is how Louis Vuitton is worth only $25 million whereas Yahoo! is trying to sell themselves off at $28 billion. What percentage of that is brand value? Is the Yahoo! brand worth more than LV? Does luxury automatically lead to a higher brand value?

The trouble with luxury brands is that they are victims of the turbulent economy. True, if times are tough even Coca-Cola is a luxury brand, but let’s be honest, a new Chanel dress isn’t exactly a worthy investment.

This list also doesn’t touch on luxury outside of the fashion and jewelry sector, with the exception of Möet. What about luxury cars like Lexus or Hummer? And what about consumer electronics? Hell, even household appliance like toasters and coffee makers have luxury offerings. Are those brands not worth as much.

Is Apple a luxury brand yet? It certainly carries a premium price-tag for what is generally considered a higher quality of construction and, more importantly, service.
