CBC Examines Typography and Language, eh?

Canadian Flags

Have you heard of the radio show/podcast called “Spark” from the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation? Well, it rocks. I learned about firstly from part-time contributor, Amber MacArthur. The show is good stuff, and a great resource for all things geeky.

In the most recent episode, host Nora Young chats with Virginia Postrel about typography in the age of computerficated and mechanised communication. Are fonts the timbre of the 21st century? The two also play the cheeky game entitled “Font, Baby Name, or Coffee?” where you must determine, based on the name alone, whether it depicts a typeface, a coffee blend, or a baby name. [Sorta reminds me of that equally cheeky game "Ass or Elbow" where you see only very closely cropped photos and have to choose.] There’s also a chat with Canadian type designer Patrick Griffin.

And on a similar note, watch this space, because I recently recorded a chat between myself and London, Ontario-based designer John Leschinski, where we talked about the quirks and similarities of design in Canada and here in New York.
