New Logo for NYC Taxis

Today is New York Day, apparently. I just learned from Dexigner (via the NY Times) that the trademark NYC yellow cabs will be sporting some new ink on their broadsides. The old standby of that fare chart, which made its way onto t-shirts but otherwise garnished little attention, is no more. Enter the new, sterile and simple, NYC Taxi.
There is a lengthy article on the CityRoom site, which quotes Michael Beirut of Pentagram:
I am a little confused by the overall aesthetic of the new graphic, which seems to be intentionally crude and lumpy, more Checker than Crown Vic, I guess. There is also a blunted trailing off of the other checker pattern which seems particularly halfhearted to me. And that attempt to combine the NYC logo which is being used elsewhere with T in a circle (why?) and that (again) bluntly rounded off and oddly-spaced A-X-I just seems a little ham handed. Maybe it looked good on paper, but I don’t find it convincing on the side of a cab.

One thing Michael didn’t note is that the T within a circle looks like the new proposed Second Avenue subway line: the “T” train. Of course, since that thing probably won’t be running until 2040, if ever, there is little chance of confusion.
What do you think of the New NYC Taxi logos? Worth the scramble and hussle and the inevitable backlash from the old-school gotham purists?
And here’s a fun NYC WTF moment: Apparently, a 21-year-old man died while riding a subway train! Read the article from Gothamist »
