Attack of the 50-foot Logos

Channel 4 logo

Channel 4, by far Britain’s best terrestrial channel, is set to celebrate it’s 25th anniversary next month. So to commemorate a quarter-century on the air, a giant ’4′ is being erected outside the company headquarters in London.

Dexigner tells us more about the logo structure:

The towering installation, designed by Freestate, in conjunction with award-winning engineers, Atelier One, will mirror the channel’s award-winning idents with steel bars forming the instantly recognisable “4″ logo only when viewed from a certain angle.

Here’s an example of those idents from recent history. I remember these fondly when I would watch hours upon hours of Channel 4 on Friday nights.

The work coincides with a major television series on public art and art in the built environment, the Big Art Project, which comes to Channel 4 screens in 2008.

So it’s all in the name of Art, as you might have guessed. If this had been a marketing stunt, designed to “increase brand awareness and connect with viewers on a visceral level”, it would surely be dismissed as corporate hoopla. But everyone loves art, especially in Europe. Or something.
