Back to School, but not for me.

September means back to school, even if you’re not a student or teacher. I think we can all agree that the workplace revolves around the school year just as much as the calendar year, what with everyone finishing their vacations and the new hires and new initiatives, etc.

But for many of us, back to school is an actual event. So welcome back. I’ve been reading the blogs quite a bit and turned a few good articles. First, make sure you’re reading the CRIT blog — it’s the blog for the MFA Designer as Author students at SVA. Since the articles are mostly created by the students, it’s a useful insight into what postgraduate students are saying, thinking, and worrying about. Check out a recent notable post I saw called Graphic Design Before and After Graduation.

If you’re a lecturer, or perhaps crafting your thesis, you might be interested in Option Shift Control, the third bi-annual graduate symposium from the College of Design at North Carolina State University. The College is requesting proposals for presentations, design and research projects, proposed artifacts, workshop or panel discussions, so if you have a bee in your bonnet, might want to drop them an email.

And finally, check out this excellent manifesto by Meredith Davis entitled The Cult of ASAP, about the lack of reflection in professional design versus that of education. Certainly an interesting read if you are of the two worlds, or if you feel strongly about it.

There’s quite a lot being discussed about design education, if you’re paying attention. I’ll see what I can turn up and continue to post here on the blog. If you’re a student, I’d love to hear your comments. Leave em here.
