It's totally an ANGLO (American, Australian, UK, etc.) guy thing to feel so uncomfortable - they are SOOO repressed by their societies, told they are gay for even looking at the photo of the guy on the package and ridiculed and self-censored into feelings of inadequacy and homophobia...Bloody hell, who the feck cares?!? Are you buying the package on the cover or the covering inside the package? Get a life, Anglo guys and grow up!

Very interesting. My first reaction seems to be the common one - why are they smelling the underwear? My husband said, "I hope that underwear just came out of the washing machine." So do I like the ad from a marketing perspective? No. I think it's entire purpose is to generate shock value, but it does little else to sell the brand. I think you make an excellent point that many men's underwear buyers are women who would definitely be offended by the ads, however, brand awareness will undoubtedly skyrocket from them. As a marketer, these types of ads always disappoint me. Nothing screams "no effort" more than ads that rely on nudity and sex to sell a product. You'd think people wouldn't be shocked by them anymore. It's been done before, but somehow, they still work to a certain extent.
