History of Video Game Console Logos

Neo Geo

I’ve played a fair amount of games in my day, including console games. A large portion of my childhood is linked to the animated, pixelated goodness that video gaming can provide. And as I grow older, and become more, ahem, professional, it’s interesting to take a look back at the design and branding of these childhood relics.

From Videolamer comes a collection of logos from the console game systems we’ve known through the years. I owned three of these, including a Dreamcast, who still get my vote for coolest logo.

Aside from the fact that today’s logos are better and more thorough, in the sense that they reflect a more mature gaming industry, there doesn’t seem to be much of a trend. With a few exceptions, even the older logos don’t seem ‘outdated’, they just look amateur. That’s interesting.

I wonder if a trend can be found in this post. Since Playstation 2 and 3 are absent from the list, I can’t say for sure what the trends look like.

Playstation 3
Spider-Man 3

By the way, is the Spiderman 3 typeface the same as the Playstation 3 typeface, or is that my imagination. These samples aren’t very clear, but trust me, they look very similar. Both are cheesy, so whatever.
