Ethnic Junk Food
You could argue the subtleties of marketing certain foods toward certain ethnic and socio-economic groups, (Burger King, KFC, anything fried, really), but there is no denying that “Homegirls Potato Chips” have crossed the line into pandering.
Ok, it was the early 90s, but still you have laugh at this. Can you imagine the conversation when the Marketing Manager, or someone, comes over the Designer and demands “add the phrase ‘It’s All That!’ that’ll be brilliant”. Man, hilarious. I don’t know what is more absurd – the adopting of street talk to sell potato chips or the racial characatures of the apparent target audience.
I wonder if these worked! I was around in ’91, but I never even heard of these. Chances are I would have had a good laugh, even at age 10.
Without a doubt my WTF moment of the week, and the first time that packaging design has early my scorn in such a fashion.
